An artistic inquiry into preventative healthcare

This poster represents a preventative health care plan offered by a non-profit health mutual as opposed to a for-profit corporation.

This is a fictional but feasible, not for profit, preventative health insurance plan. A visual that helps ask why basic, ongoing care in the U.S. must be priced as if illness were the only thing worth planning for.

The project exists as both an artwork and a research experiment. It contributes to the public conversation about healthcare costs in the United States while exploring whether a non-profit, member-owned health mutual focused on prevention could ever responsibly exist.

The idea

Preventative and holistic care is often fragmented, uncovered, or paid for out of pocket, even though it lowers long‑term costs.

This project imagines what a health plan might look like if prevention were the starting point.

The conceptual model includes:

A conceptual plan structure

The fictional plan depicted in the artwork includes two tiers:

Basic participation

Advanced participation

This structure is designed to reduce risk and encourage long‑term alignment with the project, not to maximize growth or produce any profit.

Important disclosure

The plan described here does not exist.

Why this project gathers interest

In many countries—and in smaller mutual or cooperative models—groups of people have shown that sharing health risk around prevention can be relatively affordable. When incentives are aligned toward staying well, costs tend to fall rather than spiral.

The fictional but feasible plan presented here has prices that are intentionally modest, not because care is free of cost, but because the model assumes prevention, continuity, and collective responsibility rather than profit extraction.

Although this plan is not real, it is based on an insurance model that only becomes feasible at sufficient scale.

Preliminary modelling suggests that a preventative health mutual like this would require 100,000 or more participants to be viable and ethical.

This project asks a simple but uncomfortable question:

Why does basic healthcare in the United States generate profits? and who benefits from that being treated as inevitable?
